Cold process soap batch cost calculator: cost per bar

Add the cost of the oils, lye, essential or fragrance oil, additives and packaging used in one batch, then divide by the number of bars you cut. Include labour if you want your time paid. Wholesale is commonly set at about twice cost and retail at about twice wholesale. Always run your recipe through a lye calculator for safety; this tool only handles cost.

The formula

Cost per bar = (oils + lye + scent + additives + packaging × bars + labour) ÷ bars

  • Oils and lye: priced by weight from your recipe. Lye amounts come from a saponification calculator, not from this page.
  • Scent: essential or fragrance oil, usually 3 to 6% of oil weight.
  • Cure time does not change cost but ties up stock for 4 to 6 weeks, which matters for capacity.

How to calculate it step by step

  1. Weigh the oils in your recipe and price them by the kilogram.
  2. Add the cost of the lye your saponification calculator specifies.
  3. Work out essential oil weight as a percentage of oils and price it.
  4. Add colourants, clays and botanicals.
  5. Add wrap and label cost for every bar.
  6. Divide by the number of bars cut.

Worked example

A 1 kg oil batch at $8/kg, $1.20 lye, 4% essential oil at $90/kg, $2 of additives, 10 bars wrapped at $0.45.

Oils1 kg × $8 = $8.00
Essential oil40 g × $0.09 = $3.60
Batch$8 + $1.20 + $3.60 + $2 + $4.50 = $19.30
Per bar$19.30 ÷ 10 = $1.93

Result. Each bar costs $1.93, so about $3.86 wholesale and $7.72 retail before labour.

How to price handmade soap for wholesale

Start from cost per bar with labour included, double it for wholesale and check the result against what shops in your area pay. If wholesale does not cover cost plus a fair wage, the fix is usually a cheaper oil blend or a larger batch, not a thinner margin.

Soap making inventory and batch tracker

Soap ties up oils for weeks while it cures. Makeable tracks what is curing, what is sellable and which oil will run out first, so you know how many bars you can promise a stockist before you pour.

Common questions

How much does it cost to make a bar of soap?

Most cold process bars cost between $1 and $3 in materials and packaging, driven mainly by oil blend and essential oil choice.

Does this calculator work out lye amounts?

No. Use a dedicated saponification (lye) calculator for safety, then enter the lye cost here.

How much essential oil per kg of soap oils?

3 to 6% of oil weight is typical, so 30 to 60 g per kg, within the safe usage rates your supplier publishes.

Should cure time affect my price?

Not the unit cost, but it affects cash flow and how many bars you can sell this month.

What margin should soap makers aim for?

Retail at roughly four times material cost is common for handmade soap once labour and fees are counted.
